Today there is currently no widely accepted way to effectively measure the risk of cyber attacks on aviation platforms and weapon systems. While there are multiple processes in place from different organizations across government and industry, many of them are based on approaches research has shown to be flawed. Assessments are also often disconnected from the design and engineering process and are more like IRS audits than testing. However, most of the issues we are facing with weapon systems and aviation platform cybersecurity would become far more tractable if we had a way to understand and communicate the level of risk. This would enable us to understand how much risk we have, whether that level of risk is acceptable, and what the return on investment for various mitigation approaches would be.
Dr. Bryant will discuss a four-step assessment spiral that will repeat throughout the lifecycle starting from the earliest conceptual design and how this set of risk assessment processes, followed in a continuing spiral throughout the lifecycle will allow decision makers to understand and manage the risk to weapon systems and aviation platforms.
